Yet the fire that burned 60 percent of his body and caused his right fingers to be amputated at the first joint above the knuckles was partly responsible for his commitment to an instrument he had started playing only recently. "At first, we propped it up on my knee or the couch," he says now, nearly six decades later. "And it turned out that my fingers just fit the trumpet."

Hood, who is also a composer, hails from a small farming town near Dallas and credits his parents with instilling in him perseverance and a love of music. "My father made it to the training camp for the Detroit Tigers but was then drafted, and my mother danced professionally on the stage of the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood before she married," he says.

After Hood's studies at the Eastman School in Rochester, N.Y., he had a fairly routine series of orchestral appointments. But in the mid-1960s, the trumpeter made a big change, spurning the Houston Symphony to teach at Indiana's Ball State University, which in turn led to an appointment at the University of Victoria, in British Columbia.

Though he and his family had "a rich life" in Canada, moving to Southern California in the mid-1970s after an extended visit wasn't hard. "I had forgotten what it was like to play on the level of the Philharmonic or the studio orchestras," recalls Hood, who joined the Philharmonic in 1982, leaving the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, where he had been first trumpet since 1979.

For more, see: Boyd Hood, Trumpeter

Trumpet Master William Vacchiano Dead at 93

Trumpeter William Vacchiano, who never missed a performance during his 38 years with the New York Philharmonic and taught thousands of students through the Julliard School, has died. Vacchiano, who was 93, died Monday.

Vacchiano, a Portland, Maine, native, joined the philharmonic in 1935, becoming its principal trumpet player in 1942, said philharmonic spokesman Eric Latzky. The spokesman noted that Vacchiano's perfect attendance at philharmonic performances during his lengthy tenure was "extraordinary." Not only was he a legendary figure at the orchestra, he also "was one of the great trumpet teachers of the 20th century," Latzky said.

During nearly seven decades at Julliard, he taught some of the world's trumpet greats, including Wynton Marsalis and Miles Davis. The current principal trumpet player of the philharmonic, Philip Smith, was also one of his students.

See also: Trumpet Master William Vacchiano Dead at 93

Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie's Life Up For Auction

Almost 1,000 items from the home of late jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie are going under the hammer. Possessions up for grabs include one of his signature bent trumpets, a Grammy Award, a piano, his record collection and handwritten sheet music. Gillespie, regarded as one of the best jazz trumpeters, died in 1993 aged 75. The items come from the house he shared in New Jersey with Lorraine, his wife of 53 years. Two of his other trumpets fetched $72,000 in February. Other items up for grabs on Wednesday include a range of drums, hats, photographs, letters and awards.

Gillespie was said to have taken up playing the bent trumpet after accidentally damaging one and discovering he liked the sound. He is credited with expanding the technical limits of the instrument and pushing back the boundaries of jazz. The sale will take place at Dawson and Nye auction house in Morris Plains, New Jersey.

Full story: Jazz Legend's Life Up For Auction

Research Shows Where Brain Interprets "Pitch"

Johns Hopkins researchers have discovered a discrete region of the monkey brain that processes pitch, the relative high and low points of sound, by recognizing a single musical note played by different instruments.

Given the similarities between monkeys and man, humans may have a similar pitch-processing region in the brain too, which might one day help those with hearing and speech problems. The paper appears in the Aug. 25 issue of Nature.

By recording the activity of individual brain cells as monkeys listened to musical notes, the scientists identified single neurons, located in what they've called the brain’s “pitch center,” that recognize a middle-C as a middle-C even when played by two different instruments.

Full story: Newswise | Research Shows Where Brain Interprets "Pitch"

University of Oklahoma Music Department Excludes Symphony Band

Performances by the OU School of Music this semester will not include the Symphony Band, leaving some music students without an ensemble this fall. William Wakefield, director of bands and coordinator of ensembles, said the ensemble started about 10 years ago, and this is the first fall since then that it has not been included.

During the fall semester, the school usually includes two large wind ensembles, the Wind Symphony and the Symphony Band. The number of students auditioning for some sections, including the clarinet section, was not high enough to fill both of these ensembles this year. Students who play instruments that had higher numbers audition had more competition than usual to get into a group. Students can audition for both ensembles at once. Primarily the inspiration of alto saxophonist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, it had an enormous and disorienting effect on jazz musicians and fans alike. Some loved it, some hated it; among the latter were Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong, whose animus lay in the fact that they not only couldn't play it, they couldn't even understand it. Contemptuously called "Chinese music" by some, it wasn't helped by the nickname attached to it: bebop, a term that trivialized the music and, to an extent, still does.

So, for that matter, did the nickname given to John Birks Gillespie: Dizzy. His friends, for the most part, called him Birks. He was an extraordinarily funny man, more so onstage than off, where he was, for the most part, thoughtful and serious, and inordinately kind and generous with his knowledge, the great teacher. He once told me, "I don't know that I know that much, but what I do know, I'm willing to share."

He was occasionally -- by younger and militant black musicians -- called an Uncle Tom, but that he was not. He simply loved to be the merry Andrew on stage, not as sycophancy, but because he liked to make people laugh. He once told me, "If making people laugh makes them more receptive to my music, then I'm going to do it, and I don't care what anyone says." By those who knew him well, he was more than liked, more than respected: He was loved.

For all the deserved reverence accorded Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, I believe that Dizzy was the greatest jazz musician who ever lived, and one of the greatest musicians of any kind who ever lived. Dizzy was pure genius, equally dazzling in his powers of invention and execution.

But when in high school in St. Catharines, Ont., I heard my first Parker-Gillespie record -- it was Salt Peanuts, a classic example of the hilarious Dadaism Dizzy scattered to the winds -- I thought they were crazy. Some of my friends, however, did not, especially a young trumpet player, Kenny Wheeler, who went on to become a major figure on his instrument and as a composer. If Kenny took Bird, as Parker was called, and Dizzy seriously, I felt it behooved me to find out what he heard in them. When it hit me, it hit me hard.

Reflections on these and collateral matters have come with the issue within weeks of two things. One is a Gillespie-Parker CD of material largely unissued and unknown, drawn from a concert they did in New York's Town Hall on June 22, 1945, with Al Haig on piano, Curly Russell on bass and Max Roach or (on two tracks) Sidney Catlett on drums. The CD is on Uptown Records (P.O. Box 394, Whitehall, Mich., 49461, U.S.A.), and that so monumentally important a record could be issued by an almost unknown label, when the major labels are doing almost nothing to the arts but damage, is a tragedy. The other is a biography by Donald L. Maggin, Dizzy: The Life and Times of John Birks Gillespie.

It contains some good stuff, especially Maggin's exploration of Dizzy's brutalized childhood and roots, going back to the Yoruba people of Africa. British writer and musician Alyn Shipton's 1999 biography Groovin' High: The Life of Dizzy Gillespie did not uncover this much of Dizzy's family background. He avoided technical discussions the reader would not understand. Maggin does address them, and the result is dismaying. It lies in the author's ignorance of music, music theory and music history. Maggin is neither a journalist nor a musician. In fact, he is a creature of politics; he was chairman of the Democratic National Committee during Jimmy Carter's presidency.

See full review: Dazed by Dizzy

Audition for the Jr. Philharmonic Orchestra

Musicians through age 25 are invited to audition for the famed California orchestra. Sometimes something significant is going on, figuratively speaking, in one's own back yard. Consider the relative rarity of women orchestral conductors in the world. It isn't necessary to look to Baltimore, Boston or Buffalo to find one. According to East Bay music promoter and aficionado Robert Rezak, we've got "our answer to Marin Alsop" right here in the Bay Area. (Alsop was recently named conductor/music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, albeit not without some furor.)

Rezak, of course, was referring to our own local feminine ground-breaker, Atherton resident Joyce Johnson-Hamilton. Writes Rezak, "This year marks her 26th anniversary as conductor of the Diablo Symphony Orchestra, the oldest aggregation of professionally trained musicians in Contra Costa County."

While she has distinguished herself as a fine conductor, she is also a noted trumpet virtuoso and has performed as such with major orchestras and in music festivals throughout the country. She has been a member of the San Francisco Symphony, the Aspen Festival Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, the Oakland and San Jose symphonies, and principal trumpet with the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra.

She has become a specialist in Renaissance and baroque wind instruments, including the "cornetto" and the "natural," or valveless, trumpet. She recently performed one of the two solo cornetto parts in the Carmel Bach Festival's performance of the Monteverdi "Vespers for the Blessed Virgin," conducted by William Jon Gray.

Studying under Bruce Vickey, she became a virtuoso in the cornetto, a Renaissance period instrument that she describes as "sort of a cross between a recorder and a trumpet with a curved, conical shape and seven finger holes like a recorder." In addition, she also became skilled playing the difficult, bugle-like, valveless brass baroque trumpet.

Full article: Joyce Johnson-Hamilton is Heart and Soul of Diablo Symphony

Malle & Miles Gem: "Elevator to the Gallows"

The trumpet comes in with a low howl just as the beautiful blonde droops her head in despair and lets the shadows engulf her face. The 1957 French film, rereleased on the big screen this week, plays Landmark's Act 1 & 2 Theater in Berkeley from August 19 to 25.

Malle, who wrote in his autobiography that he was "crazy about jazz" at the time of the film, jumped at the chance to work with Davis, nabbing him on his one night off from a string of club dates in Paris. When Malle ushered Davis and a handful of French musicians into a recording studio at 10 p.m., they had neither a music score nor a clear plan. However, they did have several bottles of champagne and the inspiring presence of a muse: the beautiful blonde Jeanne Moreau, who starred in the film. By dawn, they had recorded the entire improvisatory score.

Malle was ecstatic about the results. "It transformed the film," he wrote. "It was a counterpoint, it was elegiac." In fact, the film's undeniably thin plot needed a little something extra -- a man ruins his perfect crime by getting trapped in an elevator, and is therefore unable to meet his loving accomplice, Moreau, who spends most of the movie looking for him on the streets of Paris. But the suspense is a secondary attraction compared to the atmosphere created by dark streets, flashing neon, and spare, plaintive trumpet lines.

Full article: Malle & Miles

Downtown Berkeley Jazzl Festival This Weekend

The Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival is a summer music festival that features jazz and related styles of music from throughout the world. On Saturday, Marsalis' quintet played a set of tunes from last year's album, "The Magic Hour," and the trumpeter returned on the festival's closing day to sit in with Brubeck's quartet for two tunes.

Marsalis' trumpet warmly caressed the George Gershwin ballad "Embraceable You" - enhanced by Brubeck's sensitive piano accompaniment. And they surprised the audience by closing the set not with the Brubeck quartet's signature tune, "Take Five," but with a rollicking version of the Duke Ellington Orchestra's theme, "Take the `A' Train." That drew a standing ovation from the crowd filling the field in front of the main stage set against the stone walls of the 19th-century Fort Adams, punctuated by horn blasts from fans in their boats anchored in Narragansett Bay.

Full article: Brubeck and Marsalis Perform at Festival

Trumpet Day and Master Class with L.A. Using entirely digital technology, there are many new and important capabilities of the Morrison Digital Trumpet beyond the normal wind instrument. One of the most compelling new capabilities is that the MDT can offer the sound of an entire horn or string section from one person – because it interfaces with MIDI it can effectively “play” any instrument. The MDT is also easier to play as there is no embouchure to be maintained in order to produce a professional quality tone - some people find they simply do not have the time to maintain their "chops" on an acoustic instrument and an MDT is more in tune with their lifestyle.

It is designed to give acoustic trumpet players an easy “pick up and play” instrument to enter the digital age. Unlike a traditional trumpet, the MDT makes no sound on its own but “triggers” any MIDI-capable sound device, such as a synthesizer, sound module or computer etc, to allow the player access to literally thousands of sound possibilities.

The MDT allows people with minimal trumpet playing skills to play well beyond their capabilities with a standard trumpet – indeed, it’s not going too far to say that even a beginner can sound like a professional.. You don’t have to buzz, as with a regular trumpet, you just blow. The harder you blow the louder the sound and the breath sensitivity is super responsive to allow for high speed tounging and smooth notes. It also dramatically increases player endurance, meaning you can reach all those extremely high notes and play for extended periods—just like a professional musician.

Octaves are controlled with a series of buttons on the left hand and because you don’t need to have tight lips and practised breath control, anyone can play 10 octaves of pitch perfect range.

Full article: The Morrison Digital Trumpet

Unheard Gillespie and Parker Concert to Be Released

Think you’ve heard every Dizzy and Bird (pictured) recording out there? Aimed at exceptionally gifted and intrinsically motivated jazz students between their freshman and senior years of high school, the program creates an inspiring, stress-free environment where prodigious young players can perform, practice, and study along with their peers who are equally committed to this music. Upon completion of the program, the students serve as young jazz ambassadors, returning to their respective high schools around the country to share with their peers what they have learned, use their talent to perform community service in their hometowns, and positively affect lives through America's art form.

See Official Press Release: THE BRUBECK INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES THE 2005 SUMMER JAZZ COLONY

An Iraqi-American Jazz & Classical Trumpeter's Mission to Preserve Iraqi Music

Amir El Saffar, 27, does not seem like a natural crusader for Iraqi culture. He was raised in Oak Park, Illinois, by an American Christian mother, a professor of Spanish literature, and an Iraqi Shiite Muslim father, a physics professor. ElSaffar, who says he does not subscribe to any particular religion, learned only a smattering of Arabic and while growing up visited Iraq just once, with his father, in 1993.

But when he won a $10,000 prize for jazz trumpet in an international competition, he said, he decided to use the money to go to Iraq and learn its music. He added that only when he began to weep at the Baghdad airport did he realize he had been starved to connect with his father's country. In ElSaffar's first weeks in Baghdad in March 2002, as he listened to a maqam and heard the pain in the singer's voice, he felt something break open inside him, he said. "It sounded like crying to me," he said, a sobbing that became singing and drew him in. He said that he had also felt an intellectual fascination for the improvisation.

He learned to play a maqam on his trumpet and soon found a teacher of joza, a fiddle made from a coconut shell and the heart tissue of a water buffalo. The other instruments in a maqam ensemble are usually the santur, a kind of dulcimer; an Arabic tabla, a goblet-shaped drum; and a riqq, a tambourine.

By June 2002, when El Saffar returned to New York to play trumpet with Cecil Taylor, maqam music was influencing his jazz performance and he said he knew he had become obsessed. That autumn, he went back to Iraq to continue studying the maqam, and stayed until the end of the year.

Full story: One Man's Mission to Preserve Iraqi Music

Jules Herman, Former Trumpeter for Lawrence Welk, Dead at 93

Jules Herman, a former trumpet player for Lawrence Welk and the leader of the house orchestra at the former Prom Ballroom in St. Paul for 35 years, has died at age 93. The trumpet and flugelhorn master, who received "best new star" accolades in the Downbeat critics' poll of 1961, was in heavy demand, performing and recording with the likes of Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Art Blakey.

Hubbard compositions such as Little Sunflower and Up Jumped Spring became jazz standards, and many of the recordings on which he played, from Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth to Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage to his own Blue Note gems, are considered classics. Influenced by Miles Davis' fusion experiments, Hubbard earned his greatest commercial success in the 1970s with a series of funky, lushly produced crossover recordings for the CTI label.

Then, about a decade ago, the hardbop and fusion trailblazer so prized for his virtuosity and versatility injured his lip. The sore wouldn't heal, and Hubbard never quite returned to form.

"Awww, man, I was playing too much," he says by phone from his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif. "I was working so much, man, flying all over the world, trying to make all the records, make all the gigs, and I split my lip. It's been funny ever since."

Full article: After Lip Injury, Trumpet Virtuoso Navigates Return to Performing

Check This Out! The middle-schoolers who made up the rest of the band helped him follow his part -- gesturing when it was time for the trumpets to join in. And, when he wasn't making music, he stuck out his tongue, sucked on his finger and fiddled with the toy walkie-talkie he brought along.

But band director Lawrence H. Walker Jr., who has been running the camp for 17 years at Fairfax County's Franklin Middle School, said Geoffrey's got ears and ability like he has never seen. Yesterday, the blond boy who is a bit shorter than a trombone performed alongside 12- and 13-year-olds as part of the camp's most advanced group, the symphonic band. "Watch him," Walker said. They will accompany another true innovator, DJ Radar, in performing the world premier of “Concerto for Turntable”.

This three movement concerto redefines the pre-conceived notions of “classical” music, flipping the traditional Concerto form on its head by featuring the turntable as a melodic instrument and integral part of an orchestra.

For more information: Red Bull Artsehcro

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://trumpetmusician.blogspot.com/2005/07/sick-of-classical-music-check-out.html' title='Sick of "Classical" Music? From the 1-7 August, for the 44th consecutive year, this peaceful village of just 3,000 people will transform itself into the world capital…of Yugoslav fanfare!

Since 1961, the Assembly of Trumpet Players of Guca has organised the final (the qualifying stages take place in July in the four corners of the country) of a competition open to brass players from all over Serbia. The winning group receives the illustrious ‘Golden Trumpet’, synonymous with the numerous contracts that will follow. Although it may seem small-time, the festival brings together 300,000 “trumpet addicts” every year, an increasing number of whom come from abroad.

Full article: Assembly of Trumpet Players of Guca

Something Cool:Google Earth

Ok, this really doesn't have anything to do with trumpet, but I just came across Google Earth this week and it's wayyyyyyyyyy cool! The best part is, it's FREE!

"Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips. Google Earth puts a planet's worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop. View exotic locales like Maui and Paris as well as points of interest such as local restaurants, hospitals, schools, and more."

I typed in my address and was able to view a satellite image of my house from space! It's like the kind of picture you see in the movie Enemy of the State with Will Smith. I only wish the image was in real time. Then again, maybe that's a good thing. Otherwise, it'll be like Big Brother watching you. In the wrong hands, that can be dangerous.

On a side note, I've always like Google Maps better than Yahoo or Mapquest because it lets me drag the map any which way I like. A lot of times, I don't have the exact address, but know the approximate location. Google Map's dragging ability makes it much easier to use than Yahoo or Mapquest which just zooms in or out, and takes forever for the screen to refresh when you want to move directions.

Anyway, have fun with this! To download this software, go to: Google Earth

Question About An Antique Trumpet Engraved With "The Earle Crest"

Here's a question from a visitor to my website. I don't know the answer to his question. If you do, please let me know and I'll forward the information to him. Thanks!

"I recently bought an antique trumpet and would like some information on it and I don't know how to go searching. All my attempts have been in vain. The trumpet's engraved with the words The Earle Crest. There's also a lion's head engraved on it with anarrow through it. There's a banner that either has some Spanish or European words. There is also a flag on it with 3 stars. Do you know anything about this trumpet. In addition to celebrating their anniversary, the evening will also honor trumpeter Jack Sheldon as the group’s 2005 Tribute Honoree. The tribute will be hosted by film historian and jazz aficionado Leonard Maltin, while Honorary Tribute Chair Merv Griffin will present Sheldon with his award. Sheldon and Griffin worked together for 18 years on the talk show The Merv Griffin Show.

Sheldon’s reputation along the West Coast is legendary, and not just for his trumpet and vocal stylings. While he is considered one of the “Original Lions” of the West Coast Sound (along with Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie and Zoot Sims) and has collaborated with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Diane Schuur, Sheldon was an entertainer above all. He was often a featured soloist on film and television soundtracks and was also and actor in both film and television, including voice-over work for The Simpsons and The Family Guy. For some generations, he might be best remembered for singing “Conjunction Junction” And “Just a Bill” for ABC’s Schoolhouse Rock.

Full article: L.A. I am up to the state of Massachusetts now. On some days, I'm only able to finish one state because of the sheer number of schools I have to go through (i.e., getting the DIRECT web address to the information I promised such as the music department page and not just the homepage of the university/college.) On other days, like this weekend, I'm just takin' it easy and not get on the computer at all.

Also, on the ones I've been working on lately, I'd also added faculty information. I know many of you out there are interested in studying with a particular teacher, so this information will definitely come in handy. Some of the links to academic program and auditions information sure were hard to find. You'd think they make it easier for people to find the most BASIC information prospective students want to know. Oh well, I guess that's why I'm compiling this list ... to make it easier on my fellow trumpet players.

Anyway, here's what I have so far: Music Schools for Trumpet Musicians. Check back daily for the remaining states.

Damn, it's almost midnight on the 4th of July! He was 89 and lived in Southbury, Conn. The cause was melanoma, said his fiancée, Louise Baranger.

Born Gordon Griffin in Binghamton, N.Y., on Oct. 31, 1915, he was the last surviving member of Goodman's band for his historic Carnegie Hall concert of 1938, the first major jazz event there. Mr. Griffin was barely out of his teens when he joined the Goodman band. But he was already a seasoned professional, having worked with the saxophonist Charlie Barnet and the singer Rudy Vallee. He was a member of the CBS Radio Orchestra when the impresario John Hammond recommended him to Goodman in 1936.

Full story: Chris Griffin, 89, Trumpeter Who Played in Historic Concert, Dies

Interview with Chris Botti

Chris Botti enjoys playing trumpet, but he doesn't like to blow his own horn. When asked if women ever throw clothing on stage when he performs, the musician scoffed. "No, no, no," said Botti, who performs Saturday at the Hampton Jazz Festival. "Everyone is respectful. We attract an adult audience. They save that stuff for "NSYNC."

Botti - named last year to People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" list - said his image as a sex symbol was cooked up by a publicist. It doesn't translate into anything real at all - and certainly not provocative items being tossed up on stage. "OK, I get a couple of phone numbers now and then," he granted.

Botti's modesty extends into his role as a star instrumentalist. Having backed artists ranging from Paul Simon to Joni Mitchell and Sting, Botti has since climbed into the upper echelon of smooth jazz horn men. He now stands merely a rung or two below Kenny G and Yanni on the ladder of mellow success. Still, you won't find Botti comparing himself to heroes such as Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Chet Baker or Keith Jarrett. Botti said he hasn't had the opportunity to jam with Jarrett and he's not holding his breath. "I'm content to just buy his records and admire him from afar," Botti said.

Full article: Jazz Musician Prefers to Let His Trumpet Talk

Arturo Sandoval "Elder Statesman of Jazz" to Perform in Canada

"He's one of the best. He has a very athletic style, but can play softly, too. He's got bull chops!" -- The late Dizzy Gillespie on trumpeter Arturo Sandoval

Arturo Sandoval and his trumpet have travelled down such fascinating roads, HBO made a movie about him. Considered one of the great jazz trumpeters, Sandoval was born in Artemisa near Havana, Cuba, in 1949. He picked up his instrument early, and although he began taking classical lessons at age 12, it didn't take long before he fell in love with jazz. It was in Havana, in 1977, that he met the great Dizzy Gillespie, who was performing there. Sandoval played with Gillespie during that stint, which began a mentoring relationship that lasted for years. "After that I started playing with him almost every year until he passed," said Sandoval in a recent interview from his home in Miami, Fla.

Sandoval has over the years moved into the role of elder statesman of jazz, like Gillespie, as educator and acclaimed musician. He is a professor at the Florida International University, where the Arturo Sandoval Trumpet Scholarship was created in 1996 to benefit low income students. He also teaches through clinics at institutions around the world.

Full article: Elder Statesman of Jazz

Applications Being Taken for Jazz-MU-Tazz Workships, Clinics

The seventh annual Jazz-MU-Tazz Festival returns to Marshall University Monday, June 20 through Saturday, June 25, 2005. Applications are now being accepted for the workshops and clinics, which are open to high school and college students. The classes take place from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Jomie Jazz Center on the Huntington campus.

Participants take classes in jazz improvisation, history and music technology. Students rehearse and receive hands-on training during the classes. Dr. Ed Bingham, professor in Marshall's music department and MU's director of jazz studies, said the program provides high school students with a high level of jazz training and allows college students to be active with the program.

"The Jazz-MU-Tazz program provides a more intensive experience to enhance what high school students are doing in their jazz bands at school and also allows students who don't have jazz bands at their schools to learn about the program," Bingham said. "It also allows college students to learn about the program while providing our jazz students with the opportunity to stay involved throughout the summer."

The students also will work closely with noted trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, who has preformed with The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, The Lincoln Center Classical Jazz Orchestra and many others. Stripling also has had many television and musical performances, including the lead role of the Broadway-bound musical, "Satchmo." Millions have heard his trumpet and voice on TV commercials and theme songs, including "20/20" and CNN.

Applications must be received by Friday, June 10, 2005. The cost of the program is $200 a person. For more information or to register for the program, persons may contact Bingham at (304) 696-2452.

See Press Release: Jazz-MU-Tazz Returns to Marshall June 20-25

Need an Inspiration?! Paralyzed Trumpet Player Performs Again

A trumpet player who was told he would never play again after becoming paralysed is to perform with a specially designed instrument.
Clarence Adoo has been in a wheelchair since a car accident 10 years ago left him unable to move from the neck down.

The accomplished musician is now due to give a solo performance at a music festival in Orkney using a computer-aided instrument. It is operated by a head-mounted sensor and highly controlled breaths. The instrument, called Head Space, was designed by electronic music specialist Rolf Gelhhaar and composer John Kenny. Mr Adoo, who formerly played with Northern Symphonia, will be unveiling the instrument at the St Mungo's festival on Wednesday where he will be appearing with the Royal Scottish Academy's brass section.

Since his accident, Mr Adoo has continued to exercise the sophisticated breath control required of a professional brass player and with the new instrument will use a tube and the head sensor to access a library of sounds. He hopes his performance will inspire other disabled musicians

See: Paralysed musician performs again

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://trumpetmusician.blogspot.com/2005/06/need-inspiration-paralyzed-trumpet.html' title='Need an Inspiration?! Under the musical direction of chief conductor Shuichi Komiyama, the Thailand Philharmonic is a collaboration between the Thai government and Mahidol University's College of Music. It will be Thailand's first full-time orchestra, with its inaugural season scheduled to begin in November.

The orchestra will perform Emerald Rhapsody, a piece written especially for the occasion by Eric Ewazen, one of America's most influential composers for brass instruments. Adding stature to the performance will be guest trumpet soloists Jens Lindemann, David Hickman and Paul Merkelo playing alongside the orchestra's principal trumpet, Joseph Bowman.

Dr Bowman, professor of Trumpet at Mahidol's College of Music, is excited at the idea of performing with internationally-acclaimed trumpet maestros, particularly Jens Lindemann, whom he considers one of the greatest in the world. "He's right up there alongside Yo Yo Ma," he says.

The International Trumpet Guild's 30th Annual Conference (ITG 2005), which will be held from June 21-24 at the Grand Hotel on Ratchadaphisek road, will bring together many of the world's top trumpeters in a series of presentations, clinics, master classes, recitals, evening concerts and even a nightly jam session at the conference hotel.

Full article: Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra's Inaugural Performance To Feature World-Renowned Trumpet Virtuosos

Mouthpieces Central -All About Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn & Piccolo Mouthpieces

Wow, I am on a roll this weekend! Later, he'd affect a hipster get-up consisting of a zoot suit and tilted beret, and play a horn with an up-tilted bell while ballooning his cheeks past the usual limits of human flesh.

The joke, of course, is that "Diz" was an innovator of intense focus and intellectual depth. In his biography, Dizzy: The Life and Times of John Birks Gillespie, writer and concert producer Donald L. Maggin has ample fun with Gillespie the prankster but tells the more enlightening story of Gillespie the pioneer who steered jazz out of a swing era that was dying of natural causes and into the revolution of bop.

In bebop's formative period, the late 1930s and early 1940s, Gillespie found like-minded spirits in drummer Kenny Clarke, guitarist Charlie Christian, pianist Thelonious Monk and saxophonist Charlie Parker, innovators in their own right who shared a yearning for a new sound. But it was Gillespie who formed the early bands, organized the tours and schooled young acolytes in the odd, syncopated rhythms and lightning-fast runs that were trademarks of the new style."

See full review: Biography Toots Gillespie's Horn as Innovator of Bebop

Durham Brass Festival 2005 Lineup Announced

In its fifth year, the Durham Brass Festival can proudly blow its own trumpet by announcing an exhilarating line-up of some of the hottest names in traditional and modern day brass. "I knew if I could do that, the emotion would come through."

The 15-year-old Baldwinsville resident was the first in a line of 866 musicians along a 41-mile stretch from Woodlawn to the Bath Veterans Administration Medical Center to play the melody. It was composed by her ancestor, Gen. Daniel Butterfield, and a brigade bugler named Oliver Wilcox Norton in 1862.

Almost 150 years later, some military officials are concerned that the ritual of live musicians playing Taps to honor veterans at their funerals is becoming less common. Saturday's event, known as Echo Taps, was organized to remind the public of the importance of recognizing veterans in this way, raise awareness about caring for national cemeteries and inspire a new generation of buglers.

Full article: 'Taps' Line Highlights Need For Buglers

Great American Brass Band Festival to Feature Trumpet Player Vincent DiMartino

The 16th annual Great American Brass Band Festival has added a few new events and changed at least one location of a tried-and-true part of the celebration.

The June 9-12 festival, which is expected to draw more than 40,000 visitors to Danville, is recognized year after year by the Southeast Tourism Society and the Kentucky Tourism Council as one of the top summer events in the Southeast.

This year's festival will feature some of the world's top virtuoso soloists, including trumpet player Vincent DiMartino and euphonium player Steven Mead. They brought their cameras and snapped pictures of trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Adolph Herseth talking to one another during a break at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Trumpeter Festival. And when Charles Lazarus, a member of Canadian Brass, joined the two, the flashes from cameras filled Toland Theatre.

Anyone who plays trumpet knew this was a rare occasion and a special treat with these three trumpeters on one stage. What was even better was they all played together in a concert Sunday night to conclude the three-day festival described by UW-L trumpet teacher David Cooper as "my dream." It was a fantastic concert which drew a standing-room-only crowd in Toland Theatre.

It was a standing ovation right away when Herseth, Severinsen and Lazarus joined together in Benjamin Britten's "Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury." They were joined by four other trumpet players, including Cooper and Robert Dorer and Craig Hara, both from the Minnesota Orchestra, in "Fantasia for Seven Trumpets," and the crowd went wild. Severinsen, known as the flamboyant Grammy award-winning music director of Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show,'' said he wanted to come to the UW-L trumpet festival because his mentor and one of the most prominent trumpeters in the country, Herseth, was sharing his talents in master classes. Herseth, Severinsen and Lazarus shared stories about their careers in a panel discussion earlier in the day.

Full article: Trumpet Trio Wows Crowd at UW-L Trumpeter Festival

Trumpet Virtuoso Allen Vizzutti Special Guest at City of Brampton Concert

The City of Brampton Concert Band, under the direction of Darryl Eaton, is featuring world-renowned trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti as special guest at its concert on Saturday, May 14, at 8 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church, 30 Main St. S.

Vizzutti has visited 35 countries to perform with numerous artists and ensembles. He was 79.

Born in Cleveland on Aug. 13, 1925, Ernest Harold Bailey played R&B after studying at the Cleveland Conservatory of Music, but found his niche in bop. He joined Gillespie in 1947, then played five years with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. He left Hampton during a European tour in 1953 and decided to stay, spending many years in Sweden with Harry Arnold's big band. His two daughters still live in Sweden, Van Beeck said.

In the late 1950s, he recorded with Stan Getz and Quincy Jones, returning briefly with Jones to America in 1960. He returned to Europe and worked mainly in radio and recording studios in Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere. He toured with many bands, and in 1986 became a member of the Paris Reunion Band. In 2000, he recorded The Satchmo Legacy, an album that Van Beeck said was among Bailey's finest work.

Full story: Trumpet Player Benny Bailey Dies at 79

Benny Bailey

Jazz Italian-Style

The jazz scene in Italy is a thriving, fascinating adventure. Italians seem to have a natural affinity with jazz. Their conversation, lifestyle, architecture and even design all seem musical. In Italian jazz you hear the obvious influences of the great jazz musicians of the past, especially American, but are always aware of the more classical traditions of Europe in the technique and structure - it all adds up to a rich and exciting music. And Melbourne will get a taste of it from May 5 to 15 when Umbria Jazz pays a visit.

Jazz came to Italy early in the 20th century in the same way that it spread across the world when local musicians tried to play like their New Orleans idols. A few of those originals, incidentally, had Italian blood; think of Nick La Rocca, leader of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, whose recording of Tiger Rag was the first jazz recording. It is said that Louis Armstrong listened to Caruso records as inspiration for his trumpet technique.

Full article: Jazz Italian-Style

John Schnell on Being a Trumpeter, Future Surgical Technologist and Pilot

When John Schnell grows up, he wants to be a pilot. That's after his career as a surgical technologist. But for now, the 56-year-old South Portland resident is content to work as the principal trumpeter with the Portland Symphony Orchestra.

It's a job Schnell has done well for 30 years, and he has no plans to give it up. He dreams about being a pilot and is working toward becoming certified as a surgical technologist, but the symphony provides a rock of stability in his life.

At the PSO's season-ending Classical concert, Schnell will solo in the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto. The program will open with Franz Liszt's Les Preludes and conclude with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. The concert is a great way for Schnell and his brass-playing mates to close the season. Generally, they are asked to play softly. But this program encourages them to "BLP" - trumpeter's lingo for "blow like pig."

More on his story: Not One to Toot His Own Horn, But Schnell Does Love to Play

Military Bands in Europe Will Trumpet Sound of Freedom in Honor of V-E Day

With performances planned across Europe for the 60th anniversary of V-E Day, you’d think the upcoming week for military musicians in Europe would be extraordinarily busy. But for the U.S. Air Forces in Europe bands, it won’t be terribly unusual, said Maj. Scott Guidry, USAFE band commander. His musicians play “well over 400 commitments per year.” Of course, that’s not one band, but may be combinations ranging from one or two people, to a 50-piece ensemble, Guidry said.

Whether it’s a memorial or a celebration, music sets the mood. So it follows that Army, Air Force and Navy bands will be in great demand for 60th anniversary events marking the end of World War II in Europe. Musicians with USAFE, Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Army Europe, the 1st Armored Division, V Corps and other organizations will be playing from Rome to the edge of Siberia’s Ural Mountains in Ekaterinburg.

Full article: Military Bands in Europe Will Trumpet Sound of Freedom in Honor of V-E Day

Jazz Man Jothan Callins Dies at 62

Jothan Callins, a prominent Birmingham jazz musician, died Saturday. Camarata died April 6 at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank after a brief illness, said his son, Paul Camarata.

In addition to his Big Band work in the 1930s and '40s, Camarata was the musical conductor for several TV series in the United States, including Startime, The Vic Damone Show and The Alcoa Hour. He was also the vocal supervisor for the 1963 movie Summer Magic, which included musical performances by Hayley Mills and Burl Ives.

Camarata studied music at the Juilliard School in New York before embarking on a career as a Big Band trumpeter in the 1930s. He was both lead trumpeter and arranger for Jimmy Dorsey's band, arranging such hits as Tangerine, Green Eyes and Yours. He left Dorsey in the early 1940s to work as an arranger for Glen Cray and the Casa Loma Orchestra and for Benny Goodman's band. He also arranged music for Crosby, Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and others.

His own recordings include Tutti's Trumpets, recorded in 1957 and considered a classic for trumpet composition. In the 1970s, he orchestrated and conducted a series of albums for the London label that showcased the work of Bach, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

Full story: Salvador (Tutti) Camarata dead at 91

World's First Self-Teaching Trumpet Makes Learning Fun and "EZ"

Yamaha Corporation of America, Consumer Products Division, debuts the EZ-Trumpet, expanding the successful EZ line of portable keyboards and guitars that teach users how to play by following lit keys and chords that show where to place their fingers. All of Yamaha’s EZ instruments allow users of any level to pick up an instrument and play it in minutes, giving beginners instant satisfaction and the confidence to keep learning.
The EZ-TP offers three selectable play modes that assist in learning how to play the instrument. Singing Play Mode allows the performer to sing along with the trumpet sound and play along with built-in accompaniment. With Waiting Play Mode, the EZ-TP’s valves light up to show correct finger placement and timing for each note of the song that the user is learning. The accompaniment even pauses until the user has played the correct valves. Normal Play Mode allows the user to play the EZ-TP as a conventional trumpet, with optional accompaniment.

Full story: World's First Self-Teaching Trumpet

Past comes to life through Clark Terry's trumpet

When you hear Clark Terry play, you are listening to the whole history of a culture.
